Help Others to Help Yourself Overcome Midlife Depression

Feeling depressed? Just can’t seem to find happiness no matter what you do? Midlife stress and midlife depression can actually zap your happiness. Have you ever thought about helping others by volunteering? Believe it or not, helping others can increase your self-esteem, expand your network of friends, and connect you with your community. Volunteering can improve your mental, physical and emotional well being.

I love this quote by The Dalai Lama:

“If you want others to be happy, practice compassion (kindness towards others). If you want to be happy, practice compassion.”

So simple and so true.

Not sure how to get started? Think about who or what cause would you like to help. Here are a few ideas to get you started on your journey to helping others and finding the happiness you thought you had lost.

Join a Civic Club in your area

Clubs like Rotary, Civitan International, Pilot meet at least monthly and always have a variety of group volunteer activities planned. This gives you the opportunity to make new friends, volunteer in a group setting and get a wide variety of volunteer opportunities.

Check online for local Volunteer Opportunities

Volunteer Match is a great site full of opportunities all around the country. You can find single events or daily needs for dozens of different causes.

Interested in a specific cause, i.e. homelessness, literacy, homebound individuals, abandoned pets, autism, etc…

Look in your local paper, phone book or online for a cause that means something to you and give them a call to see how you can help. They will be so happy to hear from you!

Since I work for a small non-profit, I can attest to the fact that volunteers keep our mission alive. They are like gold to our organization and without volunteers many small agencies wouldn’t exist. I have learned that when you give back, you get back far more. Go ahead and find some happiness today by volunteering in your community.
