Midlife Sex: Really? How About Tomorrow?

While sex might not be the same as we journey through midlife changes, lovemaking can be a more emotionally fulfilling experience in middle age than during our hormonally driven youth . With age and experience, we can shed our inhibitions and discover the joys of sharing ourselves with someone who loves and understands us.

Let’s face it, midlife sex takes extra effort. The challenges associated with reaching middle age like stress, overwhelming responsibilities, aging kids and parents, exhaustion and body changes, leave anything that takes extra effort low on the priority list.

I recently read a Newsweek article stating that many middle age couples are in sexless marriages (having sex less than 10 times per year) and half the couples have had to deal with infidelity. So, sex was still desired, yet couples get so wrapped up in their troubles that sex becomes an escape, many times with someone else.

While sex isn’t everything in a marriage, it is what creates intimacy, desire and is a great stress reliever.

Andrea Syrtash, author of How To Cheat On Your Husband (With Your Husband), states that as we grow and change, our relationships often stagnate and we give other things more attention. Syrtash encourages women to be fun, spontaneous and sexy.

If you want to maintain a healthy and happy marriage, you need to put forth the extra effort in the bedroom. Yes, “Sex, it does the body good” is a true statement.

As levels of oxytocin rise, your levels of endorphins increase, and pain decreases. Research shows things like PMS, headaches and arthritis pain decrease after sex.

So, what are you going to do with this new information? Sex makes you feel better, sleep better, look better and love better. Seems like a little extra effort in the bedroom will lead major benefits in your midlife relationship. Just go do it!



A healthy sex life with your mate may not solve all your problems, but it can often make them seem a great deal smaller. I’ve often found that good sex seems to put things into perspective in a way many other things just can’t.
